Overview
The brief.
Hilscher needed to create a coherent experience across a growing digital ecosystem consisting of a central platform and multiple specialized plugins. The brief was to design an architecture capable of supporting different user types, roles, permissions and professional workflows — giving each user a relevant, personalized experience while ensuring the entire ecosystem still felt like one product.
The Challenge
One platform, many ways of working
Complexity wasn't limited to a single workflow. Different users required different plugins, information and functionality depending on their role, permissions, technical expertise and current task. As the ecosystem expanded, the challenge was preventing the platform from becoming a collection of disconnected tools — or exposing every user to functionality that was irrelevant to the way they worked.
the solution
Personalizing without fragmenting
I approached the product as a scalable ecosystem, structuring the experience around user roles, permissions and individual needs. A consistent platform architecture and shared interaction patterns create familiarity across plugins, while personalized interfaces prioritize the tools, information and actions relevant to each user. This balances specialization with consistency and provides a foundation that can accommodate new plugins and user types without continuously increasing complexity.
