Apparently Motherhood Kills Ambition

Apparently motherhood kills ambition.

At least that’s what one client seemed to assume.

Before my maternity leave, we were discussing the bigger design projects planned for when I returned.

I told him I was excited to come back and take them on.

He replied:
“Let’s see if you’re even motivated to come back.”

I remember pausing for a moment. Not because it was rude.

Because it revealed something about how the system still thinks about mothers.

The moment a woman has a child, her ambition suddenly becomes… questionable.

People start wondering:

Will she still care about her career?
Will she still want responsibility?
Will she still be committed?

Meanwhile many working mothers are managing careers, childcare logistics, sleep deprivation, and the emotional regulation of small humans.

If anything, motherhood might be the most intense operational and leadership training there is.

Yet the system often reads it as reduced ambition.
